Learn About Southwell Station
Let me tell you a bit more about Southwell Station and what a great place it is to live, hunt, fish, camp, or take your holiday.
I'm Richard Price, and I've had the great pleasure of owning Southwell Station and living on the land for more than 30 years. The homestead you see in the photo above was built in 1986. It's located at the end of our 40 km driveway and is in a lovely relaxed setting near a permanent waterhole known as Toby's Lagoon
Southwell Station was originally part of Strathgordon, a 2500 km square property that has since been divided into 4 smaller properties. Southwell is one of those 4 properties and covers 520 square miles of the beautiful Cape York Peninsula.
Southwell Station is a 146,000 hectare working cattle station on the eastern side of the Gulf of Carpentaria and about 50km inland from the west coast of Cape York. We run over 2500 head of cattle on the property.
To give you a better idea of where we are situated, Southwell Station is located 670 km northwest of Cairns and 150 km from the aboriginal settlement of Pormpuraaw.
This is convenient if you want to fly in from Cairns because there are 5 flights each week to and from Pormpuraaw and Cairns, allowing regular access.
We also have our own all-weather airstrip for a weekly mail service by air provided by Westwing Aviation. They also carry passengers from Cairns to the station and return for even greater convenience.
Situated on the Edward and Holroyd Rivers with Green Ant, Mistake, and Flying Fox creeks all running through Southwell station, makes our location an ideal spot for those who want to enjoy some remote fishing in northern Australia.
Our waters produce Barra, Black Bream, Saratoga, and crayfish in abundance, just to name a few.
The hunting season runs from mid August to mid November, and we accommodate those interested in hunting for pigs, dingoes, and trophy bulls.
With our numerous swamps, waterholes, and lagoons, Southwell is a haven for the pig hunter. Those who prefer bow hunting and doggers are also welcome.
We provide all meals and accommodation at the homestead and pigging camps with every hunting or fishing adventure package purchased.
